What you'll get from this guide
  • ✓Serial plate first, hour meter second
  • ✓Fresh paint, then hidden rust
  • ✓Welds and bolts tell the repair story

Every week we meet buyers who came to China to buy used excavator units — and nearly bought a trap instead. A second hand excavator from China can genuinely save you 30–50% against a new machine, but this market also moves repainted wrecks, re-stamped serial plates and clocked hour meters from dealer to dealer. As a sourcing agent based in Zhengzhou, I have watched the same tricks repeat for years, and they are easy to catch once you know where to look.

So how do you check a used excavator from China on a single visit? Run the twelve checks below — grouped into six quick points, each covering two tests you can do in the yard or over a live video. They pair with our deeper guide, How to Spot a Repainted Machine: 12-Point Checklist Before Buying Used Machinery from China. And if you cannot stand at the machine yourself, we run the same checklist for you on a video call or on site.

1. Serial plate first, hour meter second

Start with the identity: the serial numbers on the plate must match the engine stamp and the export documents, and the plate rivets should look original, not re-drilled. Then read the hour meter against physical wear — a 2,000-hour reading on a machine with worn track sprockets and a tired cab tells you the meter was turned back.

2. Fresh paint, then hidden rust

Inspect the paint with suspicion: fresh shiny paint over old rust is the classic repaint job — check the bucket, the counterweight and under the cab floor, where repainters rarely bother. New paint also hides repaired cracks, so run a magnet over suspect panels; if a thick filler layer sits under the paint, the metal was patched.

3. Welds and bolts tell the repair story

Run your eye along the boom, the arm and the turntable: factory welds are uniform robot beads, while rough, re-painted or cracked beads mean structural repair after an accident. Around the pins and swing gear, look for replaced bolts, rounded heads or mismatched torque marks — the usual clues that a major component was opened up.

4. Hydraulics cold — then on a live test video

Start the excavator cold and watch the hydraulics: the boom should not sag or drift, cylinders should stay dry, and every function should move smoothly without whining or jerking. Then ask for a live test video showing the machine running and the serial plate readable — if the seller hesitates, that is an answer too. We can run this check with you on a video call, or on site.

5. Undercarriage against the meter, weight against the spec

Track and undercarriage wear is the most honest hour meter a used excavator from China has: compare the sprockets, idlers and track bushings with the meter reading before you trust either one. Then check the machine against its spec sheet — an odd counterweight or an empty weight that does not match the brochure means parts were swapped or removed.

6. Documents, then warranty in writing

Collect the paperwork before any payment: commercial invoice, packing list, year of manufacture and serial records that match the plate you inspected. Put every promise in writing — a used excavator rarely keeps a factory warranty, so any engine or hydraulic cover must be written, signed and specific, never a WhatsApp voice note.

The price rule we apply to every used excavator

A sound used excavator from China should cost 30–50% less than a comparable new machine. A discount much deeper than that usually means the machine is worse than it looks; a discount much smaller means the seller is better than the machine. Benchmark the new price of the same model, then subtract the cheap insurance: our video-call or on-site inspection is USD 100 per machine — a small line compared with a bad buy.
